Getting there from the cruise port

Santorini cruise ships typically anchor in the caldera rather than berth alongside a town pier. Most passengers reach shore by tender — commonly to the Old Port (Skala) beneath Fira, though some operators and larger ship deployments use Athinios commercial port with coach transfers to designated meeting points instead. Arrangements vary by ship and tour, so confirm your exact pickup and drop-off from your booking confirmation before sailing day, not from a generic port map. From the Old Port, the cable car to cliff-top Fira is the usual option, but on multi-ship days the queue can consume a meaningful slice of a short call. A steep walking path of roughly 600 steps also links the port to Fira; it is exposed, often hot in summer, and not suitable for all passengers. Donkeys have a long history on this route but are not a recommended modern choice given welfare concerns, crowding and better alternatives — treat them as historic context only. Excursions may meet at the Old Port, Athinios, Fira or other confirmed points depending on the product. Plan every day backwards from your ship's stated all-aboard time, not its published departure, and build in tender and transfer buffer on busy days.

Tips for cruise passengers

  • Bring sun protection and a change layer — reflection off water intensifies UV
  • Not ideal if you cannot swim or handle moderate paddling
  • Confirm meeting point and whether wetsuits are provided seasonally

Typically not included

  • Swimwear and towel
  • Water shoes if desired
  • Transport to launch point if not listed

Morning Sea Kayak and Snorkel with Lunch — FAQs

Do I need kayak experience?

Beginners often join with guide support, but moderate fitness and comfort on open water help. Confirm with operator.

What if sea conditions are rough?

Operators may alter or cancel for weather. Check cancellation and refund terms on the partner page.

Does this visit Oia?

No — this is a water-sports day, not a village tour. Pair with an independent afternoon if your ship allows.
